Journey to complete works

Sometimes it can be a long journey to complete a work.  Some paintings seem to take on a path of their own and I just follow on.  I try many things to achieve a certain texture, light or atmosphere.

Looking at the first image here;..scene 1..  on canvas, 24 x 20ins, I was’nt happy that it captured the scene in the way I wanted to present it.

In scene 2 I still was’nt happy with it.

Got my rags ready..scene 3…don’t they look artistic?!…spilled some thinned paint on the still wet painting..

Scene 4…what a glorious mess!..no wonder I’m always covered in oil stains!

In scene 5 I press the rags on the image to soak up some of the  excess fluid and some interesiting shapes show up.  Yes!..

Scene 6 is more like it.  I can never predict what will happen with this method but it is good fun and I can manipulate it a bit to capture the Connemara landscape…sometimes, if I’m lucky!!

Art in San Francisco

Jasper Johns

Really enjoyed my recent trip to San francisco. Our son, Michael, who lives there, married a Californian girl, Gretchen,  on 28th December…a wonderful happy ocassion.

There is a thriving art environment in San Francisco…so I always look forward to my visits.  There is a wonderful artistic vibrancy..full of galleries and new ideas.

My favourite and always first choice is the wonderful SFMOMA, which is full of treasures and always has some great shows on.  This time there was an amazing show featuring Jasper Johns… “Seeing with the Minds Eye”….. He’s 82 and still working.  This show presents the full range of his career …from his rendering of numbers, flags and other motifs in the 50’s and 60’s to his exciting recent works.   The show features 90 paintings, sculptures and prints and is a wonderful overview of Jasper John’s art.

He shared a retrospective show of the late Jay de Feo’s work;, a local artist who was famous for her  major work, “The Rose”‘ below, a large  textured piece; almost sculptural, like a starburst,  and very beautiful.  It was also a great show.

One could spend all one’s time enjoying art in San Francisco;  but there was the wedding, shopping, trips shows etc!

Walking – VIDEO

I always sketch an image that I’m interested in quickly before returning to do more work on it later and then often finishing it in the studio.
